This week I made a super delicious Cheesy Beer Dip to bring to a neighbor’s holiday party. It was extremely well-received and my husband deemed it Germanized fondue.

It’s the last Weekly Winners of 2008!
We had a busy holiday week with a lot of traveling.
On the way to see Oma and Opa, we stopped at Bad Dürkheim
And just happened to drive through the town of Frankenstein
Where we saw the ruins of Frankenstein’s castle
Until Oliver tried to set a wineglass on fire
And we finally got to eat all those delicious cookies I baked last week
On Friday, we visited the ruins of a Roman villa in Wittlich
We managed to squeak in time for a family portrait
Then we hopped over the border to Metz, France for some sightseeing and shopping.
We got home late yesterday evening and gorged ourselves on French bread, butter, cheese and lemon tart. We brought home a bunch of French toddler meals. After baguette and Christmas cheese, Oliver couldn’t quite finish his spinach and salmon dinner, so Rainer finished it off, complimenting the chef and recommending white wine as an accompaniment. We’re going to be gorging like kings for the next few weeks. I guess I should be glad we don’t live in France, cause I certainly wouldn’t be fitting into my skinny jeans if we lived there. How in the world do all those French people stay so skinny? Anyways, now we just need to figure out what to make with these mushrooms of death (click the picture if you don’t believe me) and we’ll be set.

I’ve been baking up a storm this week and with chasing around a quickly recovering toddler, that hasn’t left me much time for photos, but here’s a couple I took in between cookie batches. All of the recipes except for the sugar cookies were from or inspired by recipes in The Good Cookie: Over 250 Delicious Recipes from Simple to Sublime and they all turned out incredibly delicious. The sugar cookie and royal frosting recipe came from The Williams-Sonoma Collection: Cookies
and were also incredible.
I’ll be taking a break from blogging while we’re visiting the in-laws, so Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone, or as they say in Germany, Fröhliche Weihnachten! Guten Rutsch! Hope you get everything you wished for! Have a great holiday!

This was a busy week with lots going on. We visited three Weihnachtsmärkte (Christmas Markets) in Regensburg, showed around some friends from Munich, and Oliver had an operation. He’s recovering well. He’s frustrated that he can’t get up and move around, but he’s in generally good spirits.
