Real German Cuisine: Buttermilchplinsen (Buttermilk pancakes)

by Christina Geyer on July 27, 2009 · 4 comments

This week’s recipe was Buttermilchplinsen from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.  This state runs along the beautiful Baltic sea coast of Germany, and it’s biggest city is Rostock, where we lived in 2004-2005.  I never had these while there, but I’m guessing these are more a home cooking dish than something you’d find in a restaurant.

I had meant to serve these with currants (Johannisbeeren) from our garden, but when I went down the morning I made these, I found that the birds had gotten to the bushes and there were no fresh berries to be had.  I’d chosen this recipe for this time so we’d have fresh, ripe berries to serve with the pancakes, but that just didn’t work out for us.  So instead we served them with plum compote.

I enjoyed the pancakes, and so did everyone else.  I found them in between American pancakes and French crepes in consistency.  I liked eating them with the plum compote and sugar and didn’t miss butter and maple syrup at all.  I’m not sure I’d call them a favorite, but they’re good for a change up every now and then.  I’ll have to give Stephanie’s recipe for oven pancakes a try, similar goodness with a fraction of the work.  I’m all about lowering workload.

Next challenge!

Due to my aunt visiting and Oliver’s birthday (he’s a big 2 year old now!), I haven’t had much time for getting on the computer and none at all for translating recipes.  So we’ll take a break the week after next, hopefully I can get at least one new recipe translated when I post next week, but we’re heading out of town in the morning and will be gone all week, so I can’t say for certain how much time I’ll have for translating.  Coming up, there are some fish recipes from northern Germany we ought to get a start on, and perhaps some plum recipes too.

I’m home in the states for a visit. I’d love to try the challenge when we return mid-September. I’ve been following your blog since we arrived three months ago. It is great and makes me want to join in. Thanks!

Now I know where those came from. My Mom always made those for me and of course she was from Greifswald which is in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. I’m going to have to make the for myself soon. I haven’t been to Rostock but I did tour the Baltics last fall and fell in love, especially with Rueggen…ciao
