This week’s recipe was Beeren-Kaltschale (Cold berry bowl), a cold berry soup for hot summer days. Unfortunately, here in Bavaria, we haven’t had the weather to go with this dish. We were wearing jackets in town for the jazz festival yesterday. The weather report said today would be warm and sunny, but we ended up eating this from the warmth of our kitchen looking out on a cloudy, overcast, miserable day.
For the mixed berries, I used raspberries, strawberries and blueberries from the market, and black currants from our garden. I realized as I looked at the recipe, that I had made a translation mistake earlier. In my rush to get a bunch of recipes translated quickly, I translated “Der Mixer” as a “mixer,” when it should be “blender.” I hope that didn’t screw anyone up.
I threw all the ingredients in the blender, which was full to the brim with fruit soup by the end. It was pretty thin, somehow I expected it to be a little thicker. In the photo in the cookbook, the berries are sitting nicely on top of the soup, while the ones I added on top sunk immediately to the bottom of the bowl, no matter how carefully I placed them.
The rye bread also didn’t grate well. I just opened a pack and used it right away, if you want to grate it better, it should probably be a little stale. So we had some larger chunks of rye in there as well. Rainer wasn’t a fan of the rye, I tried another bowl (this recipe makes 4 very large servings) without the rye gratings and decided I liked it a lot better with them. It adds a sort of earthiness to the dish.
Overall, 6 big thumbs up from the AmiExpat household. This was delicious and would be great on a hot summer day, if we ever get one of those again this year.

Sounds like your berry bowl experience had the same rave reviews in your house! Our bowls were also thin, but I didn’t know if that was b/c I used reduced fat buttermilk or not. Either way - yummy!

Any Zwetchge recipes in the book? I saw some in the store this week! Also, I had these things called Bremer Kluten recently. They’re like candy. Are they in the book?
There are a lot of Zwetschge recipes in the book, so we can get started on some of those. I’ll take a look for the Kluten, the book isn’t quite handy at the moment.
