I’m busy making Christmas cookies today, but wanted to drop all you expats in Germany a quick note. Yesterday while shopping for ingredients at Laaber’s very small Edeka supermarket, I noticed 250g bags of Natron (baking soda) for sale in the spice section. Sure, it’s about the size of the small Arm & Hammer boxes, but it’s way better than those Natron envelopes located in the baking aisle. I’m betting we’re just a couple years away from large bags. Maybe they’re even available at Metro already! Okay, that’s it, gotta get baking now.
Baking soda gets big, well, bigger

Ooh! This is good to know for when my husband & I make our monthly ‘shopping trips’ into Germany
Thanks so much for sharing this!
I noticed they’re also advertising ‘large’ containers of Bakin (which is either baking soda or baking powder, I forget) here. What a novel idea, not putting it in tiny little packets!
Juls last blog post..Oh la la! Beaujolais Nouveau!
I bought some in Kaufland as well (in the baking section near the packets).
Tammys last blog post..How Romantisch!
Hey, thanks for that. We have a smallish Edeka here too so I’ll have to check if they have it since I’m really sick of buying those individual packets. And yeah, looks like Dr. Oetker is finally moving out of the middle ages and offering both baking powder and vanilla sugar in larger containers.
I’m so happy to have found this website! As a californian living/working in Rostock (I’m assuming you and I worked for the same Rostock Institute as we have similar academic backgrounds) and very, very homesick I was happy to find your blog! Thank you for the excellent food suggestions!
Hi Kat, I guess I probably did work at your institute. Thanks for commenting and I hope I can help a little with your homesickness. Must be a shock to go from California to the cold, dark, gray winters of the Baltic coast.
Hi everyone,
I have lived in California for 7 years and have become fond of all those great American cookies, made with baking soda.
Back in Germany, I have made cookies with “Kaisers natron”, but they always have a sort of bitter taste and don’t turn out like the ones with Arm&Hammer baking soda.
Can you tell me, where I can find the original? Any store in Regensburg? Or online shop?
I am very grateful for any response!
Herzliche Gruesse,
Pat
@patricia: The Hong Kong Store on Obermuensterstr in the Altstadt usually has Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, as does the Asia Laden in Burgweinting. Good luck!
