Here in the DC metro area, the inauguration excitement is already in the air. Local news is covering the Obamas every move, speculating on what school the girls will attend (Sidwell Friends), what dog the family will get, which church the Obamas will join, and last but not least, who will fill the remaining cabinet posts. DC has relaxed its license requirements for short term leasers, to allow DC area home owners to rent out their residences for the inauguration. The DC Metro is planning for 1.5 millions riders, and the DC Police are expecting upwards of 4 million people will come to DC for the historic occasion. Campgrounds in northern Virginia are already reporting no vacancies for the inauguration weekend. It’s all pretty exciting here, and almost makes me wish I was staying until then. But I’ll be happy to be home with my hubby in 11 days.
I do wish Obama would choose some cabinet members who aren’t old Washington folks. But then I think about how well his campaign was run and figure that he knows what he’s doing and that if his presidency is run like his campaign, it’ll probably be a pretty good presidency. But doing things a little different would get my republican family off my back. Every time they announce another Clinton-era appointment, I hear, “Haha, and you thought things would be different.” One time a relative even said, “I feel sorry for you that you fell for that change line.” Uh, back off man. I never said things were going to be roses and puppy dogs when he takes over. But I did say things will be better than Bush. This statement got guffaws from the peanut gallery. Hmpf, someone even called this a liberal, left wing blog that is constantly bashing the US. Um, I guess they know that because they never read the blog. Funny how that works. Thanksgiving could be a big ball of joy this year.

honestly! i never understood why it’s such a bad thing to be liberal. being of the impression that people should live as they like as long as they don’t hurt others sounds pretty democratic to me. and i always thought that is what the US constitution was all about.
but then again, i have been born in a country where the party in charge felt they could tell every single citizen how to live their lives and obey all orders. and if you didn’t you ended up in jail or, in the early years, on the gallows.
having said that, i find it quite indicative that the US democrats rather conrtoll the money than the people, whilst it’s the other way around with the republican party. mayde i’m just a bleeding commie after all, but at least i won’t make my neighbours unhappy because i don’t force a livestyle onto them that is not theirs.
Oh dear. Good luck and hang in there. Sounds like a bumpy dinner table discussion is in the works — and even like someone’s out to force that discussion on you. I don’t envy you.
I am with you, I kinda wish he would appoint different people in some cases but I am just SO happy it’s not Bush I culd bust! : )
@rita: It’s strange the way the religious right has taken over the Republican party. It’s not about conservative government anymore, it’s about conservative values. Man, i just want some change!
@cliff: Thanks. I’m trying to avoid any and all political references for the rest of my time here.
@elaine: Oh, me too! But I am starting to wonder if he had to make a deal with the Clintons to get their support during the election.
