Video Wednesday: Tokio Hotel

Here’s the band that makes teenage German girls’ heads explode. Check it out and tell me if you get it.

I don’t quite understand the whole appeal of androgyny now, but I guess I shouldn’t talk, I’ve still got my old Poison LP, the first record I ever bought (egads), back in my childhood room at home.

It’s not just German girls. It’s hundreds of thousands of fans globally. Well, maybe a few million since they have sold almost 3 million CDs and DVDs around the world.

:)

*waves from America… albeit weakly since my head has exploded*

I just learned about Tokio Hotel – it was the toy in McDonald’s happy meal. I thought the lead was a girl – and the song is in german and very very whiny.

Poison was rock.

I don’t get Tokio Hotel. (But maybe it’s just my age …)

OMG! I laughed so hard. I think that every few years it comes back. I have no idea why.

not bad for a teen band! Here in the states I have not heard from them, but know them from my visits home to Germany. Why not letting the kids have some fun? There are far more worse bands out there…

That’s a guy? Dude, all this time, I thought it was a girl.

Hmm… I sort of like it! That guy really does make a good looking woman.

I have no problem with the androgyny aspect (full disclosure: I liked Poison, Culture Club and Bowie) – it could actually lead to less gender stereotyping, and I’m always behind that. It’s the fact that the music sucks. That sticks in my craw. I feel like these dorks got a recording deal purely on style, not talent. That’s depressing as hell.

It’s not just in Germany; my 16-year old stepsister in Florida is crazy for them!

(And yes, the first few times I saw them a few years ago I thought Bill was a girl….but he hast the prettiest teeth, have you noticed?)

Poison was my all time favorite band!LOL Can you believe they are still putting out albums? it’s kind of embarassing now. My two boys like Tokio Hotel aswell. I too thought it was a girl until we went and looked them up online..lol

My students with German relatives know them and love them as well. At least their songs are clean enough to be played in classrooms over here. I take anything to get kids interested in German:)

@Schnee: I didn’t know they had a global fanbase. That’s cool. Thanks for commenting!

@Alice: Ah, we got DJ Ötzi in our Happy Meal. I can only imagine how much you love Tokio Hotel now ;-)

@Claire: Seems to be popular with teenagers. There’s probably some cultural anthropologist out there that knows why.

@silvia: There are definitely a lot of bands that are worse. No, I think they’re fine.

@tammy: LOL

@vicky: A lot cuter than Bret Michaels! ;-)

@sarah: Yeah, but so did Britney. I like these guys much better than her. I’d say they’re at least as good as Poison too, but no where near The Cure or Bowie.

@martina: LOL, I never noticed, I’ll have to pay attention next time I see one of their videos.

@sonya: Poison’s still putting out albums? Can’t imagine they’d be good. I saw an episode of Rock of Love and oh my god. Bret Michaels is a sad, sad man.

@bek: Clean is certainly unusual in pop music nowadays. Good that someone is making clean music.
