Video Wednesday: So wrong

August 13, 2008 · Filed Under Video Wednesday

This JCPenney commercial has absolutely nothing to do with Germany, but I found it so wrong on so many levels, that i just had to post it. What are they thinking? How can they turn one of my generations defining movies (The Breakfast Club) into a cheesy commercial? Watch it and tell me what you think!

I wonder if the target audience for this add even knows what is supposed to be happening in that commercial.

You haven’t been clubbing in awhile. 80s is back. All the kids born in +1985 are all over this stuff and they’ve downloaded/watched the film a billion times. Even though they were still in diapers (or still swimming in soup) at the time, they feel connected to your generation.

I will have to concur with the original analysis and conclusions. So wrong, indeed.

Wow, what an awful rip-off. I like the idea, but they murdered it.

They showed it before the movie Saturday too, and I was incredibly annoyed. I mean— seriously. NO!

Hezamarie - alas, it have been a VERY long time since I have been clubbing. Interesting to know that my generation is now ‘vintage’

The ad was just disappointing to me - only b/c it was one of my favs when I was a teenager. But hey - I give kudos that the corporate world also agrees that it is one of the best films of the 80s!!!!!!

It sure got my attention, but I will never associate it with JC Penney… makes me want instead to finally buy that Simple Minds tape…uh I mean CD.. uh I mean MP3… well whatever is the latest music medium is… (oh and the kids in the ad weren’t drastically different from each other…if you hadn’t seen the movie you wouldn’t be able to tell from the ad what stereotype the kids should be portraying)
Have a great day everyone - strange weather isn’t it?

So wrong for so many reasons. I guess I am still in denial that the 80s are back.

Ugh!! The Breakfast Club was about how teenagers feel that adults do not understand them. This ad seems to prove that point.

I think it was an “ok” homage to my favorite movie of all time that I have memorized and watched more than 6 quadrilliion times.

However, I totally agree with Claire and therefore rescind my last statement!

I couldn’t agree more! Even the opening line made me cringe. JC Penneys should know better than to mess with the Breakfast Club. (Reminds me of the movie quote: Don’t mess with the bull, young man. You’ll get the horns …)

How horrible! And it’s all the style without the substance. They’ll be ripping off St. Elmo’s Fire next.

So eine Schande! My love of the Breakfast Club knowns no bounds and this is a travesty. What makes it all the worse os the re-worked song. Fuerchtbar…
