Friends, family and funerals

It’s been a pretty eventful week here in the AmiExpat household, I’ve barely had time to recover from the expat weekend (and people are already asking me about when the next event is – no idea yet!).

On Friday, we met up with B, Blythe and Katie in Nürnberg for Indian food.  First, we met for drinks at Bäckerhof, which is a pretty neat bar/restaurant, but I didn’t get the impression that people go there for the food (it seems to be a Thai restaurant run by Germans).  Next we were supposed to head over to Sur Mandir, where we had confirmed reservations, but the place was closed for the summer.  Huh?  We ended up back in the city center at Tadsch Mahal, which I found pretty tasty.  The spicy beef vindaloo was indeed spicy and Oliver drank a whole Mango Shake on his own.  Also, I used to think that if an Indian restaurant had beef on the menu, it couldn’t be good, but duh, there are Muslims in India and also, like the owners of the Tadsh Mahal, Sikhs, who can eat pork and beef, as long as it isn’t ritually killed (according to Wikipedia).

The next morning, we got a call from Rainer’s mom, informing us that Rainer’s godmother had passed away peacefully in her sleep, at the age of 82.  We had planned to go out that evening, but Rainer decided to stay in, giving me my first night out without baby.  Monet picked me up and we headed into the city for dinner at Exil (Weißgerbergraben 14, Regensburg), a really excellent Kurdish restaurant.  There we ran into Cliff, Sarah, B and B’s family enjoying their meal, not unexpectedly, since I knew they were going to be there.  We were invited to join them, which we did, then Tammy and Matthias joined us.

After a quick ice cream stop at our favorite ice cream shop, Diba, we headed over to the Garbo to watch the latest installment of Indiana Jones.  The Garbo used to be a porno theater and has these nice, cushy, big, plush, red seats.  Hopefully, they were thoroughly cleaned at some point between the prior incarnation and when I sat in one Saturday night.  Anyways, the movie was, well, not as bad as I expected (I expected it to suck big donkey balls).  Harrison Ford’s face didn’t move a lot, and he sometimes looked like he had trouble walking, oh and sometimes it was really obvious that his stunts were being done by a stuntman or were CGI, but he wasn’t as old and decrepit looking as I thought he’d be.  Also, the monkeys were just stupid, seriously, seriously stupid.

Sunday, I spoke with my mom and found out my grandma had died.  She’d been quite ill for a very long time, suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s, and I hadn’t seen her in 20 years, but I’m still a little sad.

The neighbors invited us up to watch the Eurocup football final with them.  They had set up a projector, so we had our own little neighborhood viewing screen for the game.  Spain played brilliantly, and they deservedly won the match, becoming European champions for the first time in long time.

Tomorrow morning we’re heading off to Rainer’s parents, and Wednesday will be the funeral for his godmother.  I’ll be offline till we’re back, so till Thursday…

There’s been way too many bad things happening to people this year. These aren’t the only 2 grand/godmothers I’ve read about in the past 2 months. Jeeze. Sorry to hear about that!
