Breast is best?

We arrived safely on Thursday after an uneventful flight (Oliver was awesome and slept most of the trip - some teenage boys even complemented us on how well-behaved he was - we told them that it was just luck, I felt so bad for the baby, and the parents, of the little girl who cried the whole trip).  I had been a little wary about what would happen when I breastfed in public, having heard the occasional horror story of intolerance, and I guess I was right to be wary.  Although no one has said anything to me, Rainer even noticed that the two times I’ve breastfeed him in public (both in restaurants, once with my back to the vast majority of people and once at the inside seat of a high-walled booth), I’ve gotten “looks” from everyone around me.  Not good “looks” like in Germany, where public breastfeeding is completely acceptable, but looks that say, “My God, is she really going to do that here???”

Although I had been worried, I’m a little shocked.  I don’t understand why I would get these reactions in such an affluent, highly-educated area of the US (i.e., northern Virginia).  It’s made me not want to go out at all.  And it’s not like I’m showing ANY skin, I’ve got nursing tops from H&M that don’t show anything and I’m good at placing him discretely.

So how do I get through the rest of the trip?  Feed him in the car?  Stay home?  Use a blanket?  I’ve been here 4 days and I’m ready to be back in Germany.  I am so not in love with America at the moment.  I miss the Germans!

Next Regensburg expat and friends dinner will be Sunday, January 13th.  Since everyone seemed happy with the time and place last time, let’s stick with 5pm at Meiers Restaurant at Stadtamhof 15.  Please pass this on to anyone who might be interested.  Leave a comment if you’ll be there and I’ll reserve a table.

Meier is great traditional-looking pub that, at 5pm, is generally smoke-free and child-friendly. They serve delicious modern German cuisine with dinners costing 8-15 Euro

Update

Sorry I haven’t really been posting or reading blogs lately.  There’s been big family drama and I’ve just been too distracted.  With us leaving next week for our holiday travels, I’m not sure when things will improve and I’ll get back to reading and writing, but I’ll try to get something up every now and then.

Oliver update

Well, he’s almost four and a half months old now, and he’s started on solids.  The crazy little guy was trying to grab fistfuls of mama and papa food and stuff them in his mouth, so I went ahead and started him on rice cereal.  I thought it would be hard, with him spitting out most of the food at first, but he loves it.  It’s been a week now and today he had two meals for a total of about 1/2 a cup.

It’s been busy, busy, busy over here in the AmiExpat household.  We’re preparing for Christmas and our trip to the States.  I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to pack in all the visiting I’m planning with old friends (it’ll work out somehow!).  Today I spent the day in town with Andrea and her lil cutie, Benjamin, and I met Rosa for the first time.  They’re both coming over later this week for a marathon day of Christmas cookie baking and Thai food (those things kinda go together, oder?).  Andrea, Ben, Oliver and I had lunch at Vitus (nice and very spacious - plenty of room for strollers and buggys), then Rosa joined us for coffee at Aran (also nice and spacious - it seems to be the hip place for Regensburg mommies to hang out).  We went to the alterna-Weihnachtsmarkt at Haidplatz, which was very cool.  I recommend a visit, if only to see the camels.  I snapped some photos, but I’m having some software issues at the moment, so hopefully I’ll post those tomorrow.  And with that, I’m off to bed.  Happy trails!
