Okay, a little gross, but I need an answer and I hate speaking in German on the phone unless absolutely necessary, so I figured I’d ask here before calling random doctors offices for an answer.
What doctor do you see for an ingrown toenail?
In the US, I’d see a Podiatrist, which translates as Podologe, which seems to be the same as a Fusspfleger – but I always thought of these folks as heavy duty pedicurists. Rainer says I need to see a surgeon. In searching the internet for “eingewachsener Nagel,” the information on my malady seems to be mainly on Hautarzt (Dermatologist) sites. So which is it: Fusspfleger, Chirurg, or Hautarzt (or none of the above)?
And the injury is the result of Charlie getting overexcited and stomping on my big toe, then wearing sneakers that were two sizes too small because I hadn’t gotten around to buying new closed-toe shoes to fit my new post-pregnancy feet (now size 41, yippee).

I am not much help, but eight months later, I am FINALLY getting back in to all of my super-cute normal shoes! Yipee!!!
And I am glad that Oliver likes the swing. Maybe Claire is next in line? LOL!
Weird. Clint posted on ingrown toenails today TOO. His was on his prevention technique.

oh yes, blogger.com doesn’t make links active like wordpress.com
and it cuts it off too, so you can’t even copy and paste the whole url, grr
anyway, you will find that post along with all posts for that day at:

truncated URL gives all posts for the day, so it’s at the bottom…..
Christina,
*all* answers are correct, LOL. The medizinischer Fusspfleger is equipped to handle an ingrown toenail; a kosmetischer Fusspfleger probably wouldn’t be, but I’m not sure on that.
The other ones could also handle it.
But to be honest, you could just go to your general practicioner / Hausarzt / Allgemeinmediziner.
I had an ingrown toenail when my daughter was a few weeks old (are the feet more susceptible then?!?!) and went to the Hausarzt, who can definitely handle such minor ailments. If he can’t, he’ll let you know.
Please never call a medizinische Fusspfleger a heavy duty pedicurist. They are licensed to treat ingrown toenails, plantar warts, corns, and other afflictions of the feet. They go through much more training than kosmetische Fusspfleger, who are indeed traveling pedicurists.
There is a difference, don’t confuse the two.
They can handle your toenail, but so can the Hausarzt as the above comment suggests. A surgeon would be over the top.
@maria: oh thank goodness, there is still hope! I was worried that I’d have a closetful of shoes to replace!
@vicky: Thanks for the link. That’s good to know!
@clint: You just need to put the link in html tags, like this. It is a hassle, but it works. I have been thinking about switching to Wordpress lately. Maybe once I get back to blogging more regularly.
@martina: That’s good to know. I wonder if my Frauenärztin can handle it, I’ve already got an appointment with her next week. If she can’t, I think I’ll go and find a Hausarzt.
@anon: My apologies. I’ve never been to one, so didn’t really have a clue about what they could handle. I just had to go with what my hubby told me. Cheers!
lucky me i don’t have to see a Podologe at all. my mum is a Fußpflegerin as well as a manicurist and she zuns a little beauty parlour. yay for helpful jobs in the family.
if you have any question, just let me know and i’ll ask her.
Seeing as a Frauenärtzin is a Gynecologist, I doub’t she’d be equipped to handle that.
@rita: That’s awesome. I’d love to have a Fußpflegerin mom, although having one that owns a Thai restaurant ain’t bad either!
@chriggy: Eh, I wouldn’t be so quick to doubt. Many Frauenärztin can also double as your Hausarzt. So mine might be able to handle it.
