How well do you know Europe?

I had the added challenge of doing this while holding a squirmy 2 month old - can you top that?

Okay, this thing doesn’t seem to work on Blogger, but my score was something in the 27,000+ area.

We’re ba-ack!

September 24, 2007 · Filed Under An American Expat in Deutschland · 3 Comments

We got back late Sunday night from our trip. Rainer’s father fell and is most likely bedridden now, but he’s better than we originally thought, so there’s that. Oma and Opa were very happy to meet, and spend a week with, their sixth grandchild, Oliver. Life’s been crazy since we got back, I’ve been running all over town this afternoon and Rainer is leaving tomorrow morning for Duisburg, I think (???). Had to stop by the surgeon and have him check out my toe. It looks fine and the bandage can come off in 2-3 days (thank God!). Okay, there’s a hungry guy complaining in the next room - gotta run! Thanks everyone for your well wishes - ack phone’s ringing!

Away for awhile

A family emergency is calling us away. We should be back in a week, but we probably won’t have internet access most of the time we are gone.

So, till we return…

Two Mini Meetups on September 29 - Be there or be square!

September 15, 2007 · Filed Under Events/Meetups · 5 Comments

In honor of Carol and her daughter Elizabeth’s trip to Germany, there will be two - count’em two! - mini meetups on Saturday, September 29. The first will be in Nürnberg (Nuremburg); we’ll be meeting by the main information desk at the Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof (train station) at noon. So far, Carol and Elizabeth, Blythe and Theo, and Oliver and I are attending. Let me or Blythe know if you will be there. I think it will just be lunch with Carol, and I don’t know Blythe’s schedule, but I’ll be happy to stick around longer if there are more folks there.

The second meetup will begin in the train station in Frankfurt at 4pm. It’s being organized by J over at Germany doesn’t suck, so head over there for more details.

Hope to see you next Saturday in two weeks!

I should be sleeping!

September 14, 2007 · Filed Under An American Expat in Deutschland · 7 Comments

Things have been much better today. Except that I’m exhausted from lack of sleep over the last two days. And now when I can sleep (because Oliver is a peaceful little sleepyhead angel at the moment), I’m online surfing and posting - CRAZY!

Oliver sucking his thumb - 13 Sep 2007

Oliver has now mastered the sucking-of-the-thumb skill. His passport arrived today (only ten days after our visit to the consulate), along with the first DVD of my Amazon.de DVD rental trial, Music and Lyrics. An amusing film, but I don’t think Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant had any chemistry.

The water came back on yesterday morning, but there was a lot of air in the pipes, so all day yesterday was spent dealing with sputtering explosions every time I turned on the faucet (it’s a little bit scary, ya know, especially when you’re sleep-deprived!). There was also some weird brown sludge coming out of my kitchen faucet that required 5 minutes to clear up. Heat’s still not on, but it’s been warmer the last two days.

I went to the surgeon yesterday morning, who took one look at my toe and said that it was the exact right amount of bleeding. Sheesh! He could have told me to expect that and I might have gotten some sleep the other night instead of freaking out that my toe was going to fall off or something! He also got curious about what the name Oliver means in German, and since I didn’t know, he ran to his office to grab his baby name book. Why a nearing-retirement surgeon has a baby name book in his office, I have no idea, but he did. It said only that Oliver is an English name and that Oliver was a pal of Roland in the Rolandslied (La Chanson de Roland/Song of Roland). The doctor told me that any time he asks a question that someone doesn’t know the answer to, he MUST go look up the answer. I guess we all have our little crazy obsessions, but he’s a really nice guy and if you’re in Regensburg and need a surgeon, I give Dr. Schindler on Adolf-Schmetzer-Strasse two thumbs up.
