If you read the comments to the last post, you’ll find out that Rainer volunteered me to make a dish for an office Grillparty yesterday. On Tuesday night, he came home and informed me that he’d told folks that I’d make satay. Wha…wha…what? It seems my loving husband completely forgot my pregnancy aversion to touching raw meat and volunteered me for what would be at least a half day of taking sliced marinated raw meat and putting it on bamboo skewers. Nice. I opted to make mango salad instead (recipe here), which seemed to go over well (I only put in two chilies since I was cooking for Germans). But I think that is the last time I will be cooking for others for a while. I’m completely and utterly wiped out today and barely managed to stay awake during the party last night.
In bug news, my house has once again been inundated with flies. It’s like freakin’ Amityville Horror in here. As soon as I have the energy, I’m getting screens for the windows at the Baumarkt. I don’t care about Rainer’s whole obscuring the view complaints anymore. I can’t take it anymore and neither can Charlie! There are also earwigs all over the place and these things are just freaky looking. I moved a flower pot last week and at least a hundred came scurrying out from underneath the pot. Now it seems some of them have decided to take up residence in my bedroom and bathroom. Yuck!
After my rush to talk about edema earlier this week, I forgot to mention that Oliver’s head has already descended, so he’s all ready to go. As long as he’s healthy, it wouldn’t bother me in the least if he decided to show up a little early.
And that’s all folks!

Earwigs (Ohrenkriecher) are really awful right about now. They’re all over the place, it seems like, including in the crack between the front door and the doorframe, so when I open the door they all fall to the ground and start running. Eww.
Definitely get screens, I’m sure Rainer doesn’t want flies all over his newborn baby. Or get a cat; Torty catches (and eats) the flies in our house.
I just looked up earwigs on wikipedia. Feeling a little queasy now. I’d say screens are a must.
Sorry you got conscripted into the satay, but I think the mango salad is a more than adequate compromise. So if Oliver has moved into position, does that mean he could come knocking at any time now?
I can’t get over Europeans aversion to screens, same in Greece and then they complain about mosquitos. I don’t touch raw meat either, I wear rubber gloves to do that…hope your little guy arrives soon. ciao
I’m definitely getting screens ASAP!
@martina: I’ve been trying to get Charlie to catch the flies but so far I think he’s only managed one. He does try. I think he finds all the missing very frustrating though.
@sarah: It can still be several weeks before he comes. I’ve read that in first pregnancies, the babies tend to lighten (i.e. drop into position) earlier, while in later pregnancies it happens a lot closer to the birth.
@rositta: Rubber gloves wouldn’t help me at the moment. I get all queasy just looking at raw meat for a prolonged period of time.
Christina,
my son dropped into position 6 weeks before being born.
My daughter was in breech position so she never did.
@martina: Oh, I really hope it’s not going to be six more weeks. I was just telling Rainer last night that I don’t think I’d make it that long. I’m rooting for closer to two weeks from now!
eeewwwww! earwigs. maybe i should lend you my cat. he’d make a field-day of it and in the end you’d have a house devoid of bugs again. he also delights in chasing after spiders. the bigger, the crunchier, the merrier.
@rita: Sounds like cats are good for bug control. It’s just that I’m allergic to them!
earwigs!?!?! gross!
sounds like Oliver might show up early… how exciting!
Lynn
Those black flies drive me insane. The earwigs (ugghhhhhh!) mostly stay outside but I did notice some down in the laundry room under the piles of clothes. Ahem. We have screens on most of our windows and they’re good for mosquitos but the flies seem to get in anyway when the terrace door is open during the day. I’d use the mosquito argument to convince R – you don’t want your newborn sweetie covered in itchy bites!
And my tip for a quick labour? Eat sauerkraut for lunch, walk up and down the stairs a few time, bake a loaf of banana bread and eat half, take a warm bath. The baby was 8 days late, but he sure came out in a hurry!
@lynn: Yup. My physical therapist was working on my belly this morning, trying to get Oliver off my sciatic nerve, and said he thinks Oliver will be along any day now. Something about the shape of my belly changing…
@christina: Thanks for the tips. I don’t think I could manage to eat half a banana bread. This guy likes punching me in the stomach so I get terrible indigestion when I overeat. I had sauerkraut last night and took a long warm bath this morning though! And I decided to just forgo the convincing Rainer part of putting up screens.
