Deutschland has a new Superstar: Mark Medlock is this season’s winner of Deutschland sucht den Superstar. He was overall the better singer than Martin Stosch, but I was very impressed with the improvement Martin made over the season. He really stank in the beginning.
Anyway, in doing a little internet searching between the performances and the decision show, I discovered that one of the songs Mark sung in the finale (on the DSDS finale, the finalists sing three songs each), Easy by Lionel Richie, was also sung by last season’s American Idol winner Taylor Hicks (admittedly, I gather it was one of his earlier performances). So, any preference?

Mark Medlock, DSDS winner, singing Easy in the final
Taylor hicks, American Idol winner, singing Easy on the ‘Top 10 Boys’ show
And just for kicks, here’s Taylor Hicks singing Crazy Little Thing Called Love, to compare to Martin Stosch’s version from the final. Martin was this season’s DSDS runner up.

I am so glad that Mark won. I only saw him in the beginning of the season before I moved to DC, and he was my favorite!
I prefer Stephanie Brauckmeyer from the first season.
@tammy: He really deserved to win. It’s too bad Lisa and Francesca got voted out so early. They were the other two contestants that I thought sang well.
@maria: Wow, season 1! You’ve been watching for a while now!
i have a hunch that mark medlock doesn’t really feel the lyrics. as opposed to taylor who actually knows what he’s singing about.
sorry for being less than enthusiastic about the german contestant. in comparison to the american contestants they all appear quite dull, less radiant. might be that even though the germans sing in english, they don’t neccessarily know what they’re singing about.
@rita: I agree. That’s the biggest issue I’ve had with the contestants on DSDS, that they don’t seem to put feeling into what they’re singing, and I also suspected it’s because they mainly sing in English instead of picking German songs. Except that Lisa, a good singer, gave the same lackluster performance on the German song she sang as on the English ones, although she sings well. And Mark’s father was an American gospel singer, you’d think he’d know some English, but maybe they didn’t speak English at home, who knows… Anyways, Martin sings well, but his performance was so stiff, I was just wishing for him to dance around a little!
Rainer says I’m being too harsh and that I need to defend the German singers!
What I want to know is why wasn’t Tobias around for the afterparty? Did they drop him after his one hit? Mike Leon sure was camera-happy, though….
This whole season I’ve been thinking that Mark seemed like an unlikely Superstar, but after watching that video of Taylor Hicks, I’ve changed my mind. The Germans have good taste.
LOL! Not really. She is a personal friend of mine, and I really do enjoy her singing, so I just threw that out there! I do think that she is much better than either of the finalists from this year (Stephie was “only” top 10).
Also…. Martin’s accent and over-enunciation have forever changed how I hear ‘Crazy little thing called love’ in my head. Tooooo funny.
She. knows. how. to. rock. and. roll.
I don’t really care for Mark’s personality, but he deserved to win hands down because he’s simply a much better singer. Martin is just too average and kind of boring, I thought.
I would have liked to have seen Mark AND Lisa both win at the end. Lisa really had potential.
But yeah, I don’t think any of the candidates/winners have made it onto the international scene. Probably as you say due to the singing in English and the personality issues. That Tobias what’s his name from last time virtually disappeared after his last album flopped.
@Jul: I think in terms of who had the biggest potential to be a Superstar, that might be Max. And Martin’s over-enunciation was hilarious!
@maria: I was here then, but I don’t think I paid any attention to the 1st season. That’s cool that she’s been able to pursue her dream of singing though.
@christina: I agree, but I think making it onto the international scene is a really hard thing to do, most non-DSDS German pop-musicians aren’t able to do it. And of American Idol winners, isn’t Kelly Clarkson the only one who’s made it big internationally? Lisa really reminded me of Kelly Clarkson, too, so maybe she will end up getting big.
