It’s true, pretty soon Oldtimers will no longer be allowed inside Munich’s Mittlerer Ring. What does this mean for poor old Oma and Opa? Absolutely nothing, since “Oldtimers” is the German term for “Classic Cars”!
We had an enjoyable time in München yesterday (Sunday), the weather couldn’t have been better. Quite accidentally we ran into a friend of Rainer and had a nice visit with him before we came upon the excitement of the day: a demonstration by Oldtimer owners against the driving ban. By the way, it’s not just classic cars that are affected, but any gasoline run vehicles without catalytic converters and diesel run vehicles that don’t meet Euro-2 Norms. The city is banning these highly polluting cars from the very center of town in an effort to reduce the high levels of fine particulate matter in the air.
But until the ban goes into effect, we had a fun time taking a look at all the “Oldtimers” that showed up for the demonstration:
I spoke briefly with the friendly owner of this classic Ford Model A from 1928
I just wonder what they do there in the back of their pink Cadillac…
An ADAC-Strassenwacht from the 70′s
The car Urkel made famous (at least for Americans of my generation), a BMW Isetta
One of the first VW bugs (you can tell from the split back window)

Nice pictures! Wasn’t it nice to have cars you could tell apart?
Sorry we missed you guys! We didn’t get a chance to see any cool cars but on the way to Starnberg, traffic was a nightmare – the police were redirecting traffic for the Oldtimers.
Bummer I missed all the fun on Leopoldstr. I also read your post to late to know an another expat was in Munich. Maybe next time.
Oh wow, my dad would have loved that – he’s an oldtimer enthusiast.
You’re lookin’ really good – only three more months to go!
@vailian: I had a great time! I know absolutely nothing about old cars, but I really like looking at them!
@Schokolade Mädchen & Heza: Yeah, I didn’t give either of you much notice, next time we’ll try to plan our visit a little further in advance!
@christina: Thanks, it’s hard to believe there’ll be a little one here in three months! And my dad would have loved it too.
