What’s the big hurry?

March 15, 2007 · Filed Under Uncategorized

Just back from shopping in Regensburg. First I was looking for a trash can that I liked and that Charlie couldn’t get into. Nothing. How is it that I have been looking for the perfect trash can for almost 5 years now and never found it? There was one kitchen-size trash can at the Baumarkt to choose from. A giant home center with only one trash can option. Pitiful. I want at least 4 or 5 to choose from damnit!

But I got a cute outfit from H&M Mama and discovered that overalls were most definitely not made for people with curves. They don’t hug you at all, they just hang there. Very disappointing, as I thought this might be a solution to the buying-pants-in-Germany-when-you’ve-got-a-JLo-butt problem. I am going to need to learn to make my own pants. Which I will hopefully be able to do soon, because my birthday present is on it’s way: a super-deluxe electronic sewing machine with 60 different stitches and an instruction video! (It’s from my family; Rainer got me a gourmet cooking class from a master chef in Regensburg - hopefully this guy doesn’t get the idea to teach us to make fish - a nausea-inducing substance for me).

But the title of the blog refers to all the crazy idiots driving around down here. There were not nearly so many aggressive, reckless drivers speeding around Potsdam, Berlin and Rostock. I’m always getting passed or tail-gated by some jerk down here, and I’m a fairly speedy, confident/slightly-aggressive driver myself having grown up around D.C.(I never cut people off or pass illegally though). It seriously pisses me off when someone passes me in a 30km/h zone where there are signs that passing is illegal. Today some idiot in a navy BMW flew by me in such a zone and there were kids playing near the street. Then on the very crowded A3-Autobahn coming back, the right lane was full of tractor trailers (LKWs) and the left full of cars and the jerk in a black BMW behind me felt the need to ride my bumper the whole way. Where exactly did he want me to go? Through the guy in front of me? Under a truck? And why are these people always in dark colored BMWs? Are aggressive, reckless drivers just attracted to black and navy blue BMWs? (Rainer says BMWs don’t come in any other color - to which I answer that I’ve seen silver, white and red ones - Rainer stands by his first statement).

Anyways, I’m sure I will have much more of this fun on my drive to Jen’s tomorrow. Hopefully it will go smoothly and quickly. Now I need to go and make the curry for the weekend! (And I also bought The Devil Wears Prada to watch tonight - whee!)

I don’t do that much driving any more (have only owned a bicycle for the past 7 years) but I sympathise with you! The further south in Germany you go, the more agressive the drivers become. I find the Mercedes drivers even worse than the BMW types, because they tend to be agressive and incompetent as well. Please ask Reiner if there is an English equivalent for the word “rechthaberisch”— combines arrogant and supercilious in a particularly and uniquely German way.
Glad to hear you have recovered from your various ailments.

Personally, I am not a fan of overalls on much of anyone. ;-)

I can’t wait to see you tomorrow! :)

@vailian: Rainer said the same thing about southern Germans. I’m so glad to be feeling better as well. Being sick sucks, especially when you can’t take any medicine!

@maria: It was so great to meet you Saturday! I hope we’ll get to see each other again soon!
