Kallmuenz – Pearl of the Naab Valley

Last weekend, we made a small trip over to Kallmünz, a town located on the Naab River and nicknamed the “Pearl of the Naab Valley”. Since the early 1900s it has been an artist colony and was home for some time to Vassily Kandinsky. It is full of sculptures, frescos and galleries. I can’t wait to come back and sit outside a café on a nice summer day!

The view of the old center of Kallmünz. There are castle ruins up on top of the hill to explore as well.

The sculpture of a nude woman lies on the bank of the Naab River. In the background, the Steinerne Bridge, built between 1500 and 1508, can be seen.

Typical houses in Kallmünz

A “painted” house

The famous “Haus ohne Dach” or “House without roof”. I would think it would be an awfully dark and musty place to live, but who knows, maybe it’s quite pleasant.

One of the many bronze sculptures that can be found around the town.

@rita: I passed this question on to Rainer, the expert on getting places, and he says that you can come visit us and we’ll take you there, or you’d need to take a train to Regensburg then take a bus to Kallmünz, or take Autobahn A3 to Laaber and you’ll see the signs to Kallmünz at the exit. :-)
