Nürnberg

Yesterday was spent shopping and sightseeing in the Frankish city Nürnberg (a.k.a. Nuremberg), the second largest city in Bavaria with ca. 500,000 residents. It has a beautiful and bustling city center filled with Medieval and Renaissance buildings and surrounded by the rebuilt city walls. Overlooking the city is the Kaiserburg, or Imperial Castle, of the Holy Roman Emperors. Nürnberg was an important city in the Empire, and was visited by every Holy Roman Emperor serving between 1050 and 1571. It was also the home of the artist Albrecht Dürer from 1509 until his death in 1528.

The Pentagonal Tower (the oldest building in Nürnberg, dating back to the mid-12th century), the Imperial Stables and the Luginsland

The view from in front of the St. Lorenzkirche (St. Lawrence’s Church). On the left in the foreground is the Nassauer Haus (Nassau House), the oldest residential building in Nürnberg, this was a Romanesque tower built in the 13th century.

The Heilig-Geist-Spital (Holy Ghost Hospital) and the Pegnitz River.

The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), located on the market square, built between 1350 and 1358.

St. Sebald’s Church, begun around 1230. Inside rest the remains of St. Sebald.

This sign reads, “Until the year 1945, stood here the birthplace and home of the Nürnberger Ratsschreiber and Forderer Lazarus Spengler, born 1479, died 1534”. Rainer is not sure, but thinks Ratsschreiber was the old term for the City Council Secretary and Forderer was someone who went around collecting back taxes. Does anyone know for sure?

Anyways, the reason I put this up, was because these signs were everywhere, and unlike in most German cities where you can ignore the signs of the destruction that was left behind after WWII, Nürnberg won’t let anyone forget. It’s very sad to think about all the history and beauty that was lost.

Charlie takes in the “Hommage à Dürer”, a bronze sculpture by Jürgen Goertz located in the Tiergärtnertorplatz (Zoo Gate Tower Place).

It was Charlie’s second birthday, so he got to have his own brötchen with 3 Nürnbergers for lunch (roll with three Nürnberg sausages, a yummy local specialty). Everywhere we take Charlie, he gets attention, and since our move, we’ve heard a lot of “Awww, is a schee!”, which is Bavarian for “Awww, ist er schön!” (“Awww, isn’t he beautiful!”).

Curious?

In case you want to know what I listened to last (or who I listen to most), I added the iLike music widget to my sidebar. It’s located on the right between “Links” and “Labels” and is linked up to my iTunes. If there is a “play button” next to the song title in the widget, you can click on it for a preview of the song. I think this is actually a pretty cool little feature. Enjoy!

Wilkommen Edward!

My friend Lynn gave birth on the 18th to a healthy, bouncing baby boy! Congrats!

I’m a busy little bee

Next week is going to be a pretty exciting week. The Oscars are Sunday night, not sure I’m going to stay up for them. Monday morning we have our super duper second trimester ultrasound at St. Hedwig’s hospital where we will most likely find out the sex of the baby. I will try to post something afterwards, but you may have to wait a week because Monday afternoon we leave for Göttingen. I have all day Tuesday on my own in the city while Rainer attends meetings, so if you’re going to be there too and want to meet up, email me.

Tuesday night we will be arriving in Berlin (and Rainer will be turning 41!). We’ll be staying in Berlin until Thursday evening (March 1), I have one day in the city alone and one with Rainer, I forget which day he has meetings on. Anyways, let me know if you want to meet up with me in Berlin. Maybe if there’s a bunch of folks we can have dinner on Wednesday night (Tony Roma’s in Potsdamer Platz anyone? I could go for some ribs).

Another thing going on is all of a sudden (in the last two months), I’ve been getting approached by companies who want to advertise on my blog. I certainly don’t consider my blog to be one of the more popular out there, I’m only getting about 150 hits a day at the moment, so I find this really strange. And it’s not random companies I’ve never heard of, it’s advertising firms working for leading Japanese electronics companies and major American television networks, etc. (none of whose products seem to me to be especially of interests to expats living in Germany - the bulk of my readership). It just seems so strange. Is this a new marketing scheme? Targeting fairly small blogs? I’m certainly no “leader in the blog community”, nor do I “know a lot regarding Troy” (they link to an old post in which I go on and on about all the hot actors in the movie Troy). Do they really expect to win folks over with this garbage? Anyways, I plan to have this blog as an advertisement free zone unless I actually personally endorse the product. Now watch, just because I’ve made this statement, next week I’ll find it’s decidedly in my best interest to advertise stuff - well, I hope not.

Oh man, I just got a sudden craving for cheesecake pie with cherries on top. Where the heck am I going to get this? And I’m going for a trim at the local Laaber hair salon in an hour (actually, there are four hair salons here, very strange), so wish me luck. I very much hope not to show up in Berlin sporting a mullet.

How well do you know me?

Take the test and we’ll all find out!

Create your own Friend Test here
After you submit your answers, they’ll ask you for your email addy. I’m pretty sure that you can just make up an email if you don’t want to give your real one. They only send me emails when someone fills out my test, so if you want to make your own test and get email updates when someone’s completed it, then you would probably want to give a real email address. And if you already have an account, log into it first or when you submit your answers it just asks you to log in and doesn’t calculate your score.

Tell me if you make a quiz. And here are Vicky’s and Clint’s quizzes (on which I got 60% and 50%, respectively). I’ll post answers once this post is off the front page of the blog.

Social networking etiquette???

February 22, 2007 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 4 Comments

I’ve heard of social networking, in fact, I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about MySpace, but while perusing Clint’s blog tonight, I came across a site that sounds like it could be interesting. iLike keeps track of the music you like by linking up with your iTunes, and helps you get in touch and trade music with people who have similar musical tastes. Okay so far, but after signing up, I have no idea what you’re supposed to do on these sites! I’ve already been invited by someone to be a friend, but we don’t really seem to have similar favorite bands, so I’m not sure what to do. Am I supposed to just accept friendship in order to collect friends, or am I supposed to be a little pickier about this sort of thing? Help! I’m such a social networking Anfänger!

Oh, by the way, my iLike profile. Join up and “friend” me (if you dare)!

A Whale of a Time

It only took me two months, which I’m pretty sure is the longest it’s ever taken me to read a book, but I’ve finally (ENDLICH!) finished Moby Dick. Hurrah!

I’m not sure that I would recommend it to others… well, if you like really long, complicated sentences, it’s probably a book you should pick up. I read it because I’m a classic lit fan and I figured that you can’t like classic lit and not have read Moby Dick (and also because it’s Jean-Luc Picard’s favorite book - I’m such a ST geek). Anyways, I’m so happy to be returning to my less intense, normal schedule of a book per week. I’ll probably be steering away from history and biographies for a couple weeks though. I need some brain candy after that exercise. Maybe I’ll try a Robert Ludlum book; the Bourne Identity has been sitting on my shelf for a while…
