Tonight, we ate dinner at Siam, a Thai restaurant at Friedrich-Ebert-Str. 13 (sorry Lynn! I know we were going to try it out, but Rainer REALLY wanted to go there – and we can try Sala Thai on Dortustr. instead). The meal started out well. I had Tom Kha Gai, which was a little watery, but otherwise good, although I did have to add a hefty squeeze of Vietnamese chili sauce. Unfortunately, the entrees were a complete disappointment. We shared Massaman beef and Pad Thai Gung. The Massaman beef hardly had any curry or spices in it, it was basically overcooked, low quality beef strips in coconut milk with a couple peas thrown in for fun. The Pad Thai noodles were overcooked to the point of being tasteless mush, while the shrimp and tofu was overfried. The Lassi’s also came out of a bottle, but still tasted okay.
After dinner, we walked over to the famous La Maison du Chocolat at Benkertstr. 20 in the Dutch Quarter, where I ordered a Schokolade. This is basically just a small coffee cup of warm chocolate with a side of whipped cream and a shot of liqueur. It is utterly delicious at first, but after half a cup, I was feeling completely overwhelmed. It is very rich. I managed to finish the cup, but didn’t feel all that well for a little while after that, but if you’re into rich, mighty, chocolatey desserts, I’m sure you’ll love it. And their cake display was mouth-watering.

hmmm… sounds like I didn’t miss out on much. Too bad about Siam.

Cologne has its Chocolate Museum, really worth a visit– you see the living chocolate trees and there is a complete Chocolate Factory in the building, kids love it. But you have to be a real chocofreak to go there more than once.
Best chocolate shop I know is in Barcelona, in a wonderful old Art Nouveau building on the Rambla near the Opera. A cup of hot choc there gives you enough calories so you don’t have to eat for 2 days.
Thanks for the tips. Maybe Rainer and I can visit the Chocolate Museum at Christmas time (or during the Blogger Meetup). We still haven’t gotten around to the Gummi Museum in Bonn yet either. Cool, with the addition of the traditional cookie plate I always get at Rainer’s parents’ house, I can be on a sugar high the whole trip!
Found this looking for info about the famous La Maison du Chocolate. We’re in Potsdam now and heading that way for breakfast! Can’t wait to try it!
