I’m in a better mood today and am now considering if I want to go into Berlin for the Brazil v. Croatia game tonight. And maybe I will go into Potsdam too and check out the Togo v. S. Korea game first. There is a viewing screen in front of Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate. Charlie says, “What? You’re going to leave me here alone all day??? You suck.”
I’ve also heard that fan paraphernalia from all the teams is available at Karstadt, so maybe I will hit the one in Potsdam and see if I can get myself something USA team related (since there was pretty much nothing but this US flag at the Berlin Fan Fest and walking around draped in a giant US flag is just a bit to overt for me; it only works if you’re in a crowd of USA fans, which I might be at the Fan Fest, but on the way there it would be Rainer, his Italian colleague, and I). But do all Karstadts have the stuff? I might have better luck at KaDeWe in Berlin.
If I do make it out and about, stay tuned for pics, I’ll certainly document all my World Cup related adventures.

I was teaching all afternoon, but will try to watch the Brazil-Croatia game tonight. I love Brazil’s style but am going to be rooting for Croatia, first because I always root for the underdog, but also because I teach in Croatia every summer and love it. I expect that they don’t have a vestige of a chance, but I just opened my last bottle of Croatian beer and hope they do well.
Rainer’s rooting for Croatia. I kinda think Ronaldo is cute, so I suppose I’m rooting for Brazil, but really I’m just rooting for Ronaldo to have a good game.
I’ve always wanted to visit Croatia. Someday… *sigh*
Hey Vak, it’s cool that you’re around and commenting. Just wanted to say that. You’re only the second non-friend of mine to become a regular reader and I think the first stopped reading a while ago. And what do you teach? Photography? That’s a very cute kid in the photo on your blog.
Ronaldo IS cute, but last night his team seemed a bit lazy. I bet they rev up considerably in the next few games. I won’t (sadly) be able to watch the Poland-Germany game because I am working tonight, but it might be good.
Croatia is amazing. Get Rainer to take you to Dubrovnik (German Wings flies there pretty cheaply), it is astounding and friendly. I flew down with my girlfriend last fall for a few days and we loved it… I teach in northern Croatia (Istria) every summer (I run a chamber music master class), and although the organising is tedious and frustrating sometimes, I look forward to it every year.
Blogging is such a strange phenomenon. It’s serendipity appeals to me, I am not consistent with it because I don’t usually have time to sit around at the computer, but your blog caught me at a good moment, there are not so many articulate Americans in Germany blogging. Well there probably are, but I haven’t stumbled onto them.
Yeah, my daughter Cordelia is cute and very bright, unfortunately she lives in Barcelona so I don’t see her that often. (Thank God for Germanwings).
I don’t know that there are even that many articulate Americans in Germany, let alone blogging. *just kidding!*
I learned German at the Goethe Institute in Berlin (which was great), but when I got to Oberstufe, I was stuck in a class with a bunch of embassy guys who spent most of each lesson trying to prove themselves intellectually superior. That was torture.
Brazil was pretty lazy last night, but they still beat Croatia, which is a really good team, so they couldn’t have been as bad as they looked. I think they just didn’t feel the need to exert themselves.
Tonight’s game should be good. Poland is out if they lose, so they should put up a fight. And there are a lot of Polish in Berlin, so it should be a cool atmosphere at the Fan Fest.
