The First Upset

The first big surprise of the World Cup: Trinidad & Tobago draws with Sweden 0:0. Sweden was clearly the better team, outplaying T&T at every step, but luck and heart kept them scoreless. The Trinidad & Tobago players never gave up. Even at the end, when you could see the exhaustion, the effort it took to keep running, they still fought.

Next up: Argentina vs. Ivory Coast. This should prove to be an excellent game, with both countries fielding strong teams.

I realized I need to expand on my prediction for the Final. I predict England over Brazil 2:1.

There was not much celebrating going on here in my neighborhood after the Germany win last night. A few firecrackers was all.

Rainer and I were discussing the threat of terrorism during the World Cup and it seems that Germans are really worried about this (every time we hear the news, Rainer says, “No terrorist attack yet? Good.”). For me, I don’t expect the chance of terrorism to be higher here than at any other large gathering, but it seems that the ’72 Munich Games with the attack on the Israeli athletes is still in the minds of many Germans, and they don’t want to be associated with another terrorist attack against foreigners. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that nothing happens and everyone has a good time and makes it home safely.

I am not worried about a terrorist attack in the stadiums because of the world cup, but about a terrorist attack at our home because of the american flag that is flying outside.
