Charlie the Wonderdog
I am surprised on almost a daily basis about how smart Charlie is. Evidence:
1) He learns commands within a few tries (but he’s a stubborn guy so he doesn’t always do what he’s told) - Berners are supposed to be very intelligent and quick learners
2) He can use his paws in an almost hand-like way. He plays patty-cake, he scratches his nose with both paws at the same time, he will lay on his back and hold his stuffed toys between his paws so he can chew on them, and he will put his paw on your shoulder while you’re both sitting on the couch watching tv like he’s saying “Hey pal, it’s fun hanging out with you”
3) When he got two new toys recently, he had to immediately bring each of them in turn to show to Rainer when he got home as if to say, “Hey, look what I got today, isn’t it cool!”
4) Charlie has a harness for riding in the car that buckles into the seatbelt thingy. Twenty minutes before puppy school, he brought the harness to us and dropped it at our feet, “Let’s go! Let’s go!” was his expression.

I’m Bushed
I guess God has it in for the US. Two level 4 hurricanes within a month, and this one’s going for Texas. Hmmm….
But the US leadership aren’t the only arrogant, bumbling, confused guys out there: on election night, Gerhard Schroeder showed up drunk at a debate and started attacking everyone (verbally). Germany is “a big mess” right now, to quote BBC World. There is basically no government at the moment because no party got a majority of the votes. The conservatives (CDU/CSU) got the most votes, which should mean that a coalition between them and SPD should be led by Angela Merkel, making her Germany’s first woman Chancellor. Unfortunately, Gerhardt Schroeder (of the SPD) says he will not join any coalition where he is not chancellor, because his party did better than predicted, which he interprets as meaning that his party won.
Charlie has an eye and an ear infection. On Tuesday he’s getting an ultrasound to find out why he has blood in his urine. He’s approaching 90 pounds now, so it doesn’t seem that his near constant illnesses are affecting his growth.
So long and thanks for all the fish
If anyone is still checking if I’m still posting, here I am!
So, what’s been going on in my life? My aunt came to visit and we toured all over the place, went to Szechzin(sp?) and the Baltic coast in Poland, Dresden, some town in the Czech Republic (need to look this up), Erfurt, Eisenach(Wartburg), Trier, the Moselle Valley, the Eifel, Luxembourg, Spa(Belgium), Aachen, and Cologne. Charlie came too, so he’s now an international dog of mystery. He’s also peed in the middle of the street in five countries.
Movie reviews:
The Machinist - good acting, completely predictable (especially when they describe it as similar to Fight Club on the box), ending is a bit weird.
Sideways - really good, intelligent and funny. Wine lovers should really like it, or not, depending on how accurate all the stuff about wine is. I personally know nothing about wine, except that really good rieslings are drinkable.
The Grudge - pretty dumb and not that scary.
Hide and Seek - why in the world did Robert Deniro agree to star in this stinker?
Hitch - good fun, many comedic moments, but not great or anything.
Kinsey - really good, but stay away if you are a prude or freaked out by homosexuality and nudity. Don’t bother me, especially when I was flipping through the channels one evening and saw a woman actually sticking a man’s penis in her mouth and giving him oral in a movie on a network channel.
That’s it for now. Later gator.
