Greetings from rehab

I’m now 5 days at rehab and have lost at least .7 pounds. (I don’t remember what I weighed in as on the first day, so this is .7 pounds in the last two days, and it’s actually .3 kg, which is why I don’t remember the first weight, because my brain wholly objects to the existence of the metric system).

I was starving last night before bed, I literally thought I was going to die (okay, not literally). I had to take a sleeping pill to get to sleep, but I’ve been taking a sleeping pill every night since I got here, so that’s actually no big change.

Yesterday I went for an hours walk along the beach, did a half-hour of swim-jogging, then walked into town to buy some fruit (45 min roundtrip) - due to my starvation. I was also very depressed, due to the fact that it’s hard to find people to hang out with here. I played rummy with some old ladies the other day. That was cool and they were really funny, but I haven’t found them since. Maybe they’re hiding from me. And I’m being shadowed by this weird old German guy who asked me if I was going to the mixed sauna today (where men and women can go and sit around naked in a steam room). I told him, no, I was going to be hanging out with my husband.

Rainer, Sabine and Charlie will be here any minute now (so I need to make this quick and get to the lobby to wait for them). Sabine is a friend of mine from Max Planck in Rostock (Rainer’s my husband and Charlie’s my dog, in case you didn’t know). We’re going to the inner side of the peninsula to look at the wetlands, but first we’re going to a seafood restaurant because I want fish and that’s allowed. So, Ciao for now!

Chicken Gods

What a pleasant surprise, there is internet access at rehab, but it’s expensive so this will be short.

So far I haven’t done much except listen to talks about how everything works here, but the other patients say this will pick up soon and I’ll be so busy I won’t know what to do. At 3pm I try Water Jogging.

I found a rock on the beach that is called a Huhnergott (Chicken God). It’s black with white spots and has a naturally made hole in it. Not sure why it’s called Chicken God or if it’s supposed to symbolize anything, maybe I will get around to looking it up later.

Half my face is numb now after my first root canal treatment. I suppose it wasn’t so bad, but I need to go back at the end of September to get a permanent filling done; today was just the root filling.

I’m looking forward to rehab tomorrow. I hope it’s more like a spa than a hospital and I have a nice, relaxing time recouperating.

I’m pretty sure Charlie senses I’m leaving. I’m trying not to act like anything’s up, but he follows me everywhere tugging on my pant legs and if I sit down he needs to sit on my lap. The good news is, he’s really perky and alert, and not peeing so much, so I think he might be better. We have a vet appointment at 5:15, so we’ll know more then. Maybe I’ll update y’all.

I read The Godfather. It is the story that is covered in the first two movies (but Fredo doesn’t die - that was in #2 right?), but with some more details and stories of the minor characters. Overall, it’s basically a way to live the movies over a few days and Puzo’s writing style is a bit strange. I’m trying to put my finger on just what it is. I think the novel kind of reads a bit like a cross between fiction writing and newspaper writing. It’s okay, but I don’t really get emotionally involved with most of the characters. I actually was most interested in Sonny’s ex-mistress, who ends up working at the casino in Vegas and getting involved with a doctor (she doesn’t have Sonny’s baby in the book).

I also read Harry Potter (in less than 24 hours while getting 8 hours of sleep!). Of course I enjoyed it, but I think the story of the Half-Blood Prince was not as compelling as the stories in previous books. I’ll try not to give away anything, but if you haven’t read it, you may want to steer clear of the rest of this paragraph. I continue with my belief that Snape is a vampire, since in the book he is once again described as looking more and more like a giant oversized bat. I also don’t think Snape’s actions are all that they appear to be on the surface. Perhaps he was even ordered by Dumbledore to take the actions that he did. That’s my theory anyway.

"Is it safe?"

Man oh man oh man. I just got back from the dentist and I need to get a root canal at 3:30 today. This sucks big time. I’ve heard they are incredibly painful. Why do teeth need nerves? Aha, to grow. Maybe they can knock me out. Waaa! I don’t like these crazy Nazi dentists here.

Well, as you can guess, we’re back from visiting Rainer’s parents. I picked up a 5 and 20 Euro cent piece from Luxembourg during the trip. I wanted the other coins, but Rainer didn’t seem eager to buy a coke from every shop we passed. I got a Greek Euro the other day in Potsdam too. However, since I haven’t been much in the US the passed few years, my State Quarter collection is going quickly downhill. By the way, in Germany, if you ask someone to come over and see your coin collection, this is asking them over for sex.

Tomorrow I go to rehab for 3-4 weeks, where I doubt there will be internet access, but you never know. Anyways, I’ll try to post again after the torture, er, I mean dental work is done.

Drumroll Please!

I know you could hardly contain yourself during the wait, but it’s finally over…
My new website is online!

Okay, okay, it’s much more exciting that it’s less than 24 hours to Harry Potter, but so it goes.

Looks like this year will be another “Tour de Lance”. Somehow it’s just not as exciting as last year. We’re getting ready to leave for a weeks visit with Rainer’s parents (where I will be reading Harry Potter all day and night, no doubt), then I’ll be at least 3 weeks in rehab, so depending on the availability of internet, there may be no new posts for awhile, yea, I know, big change!
