Oh the pain… and conservative bigots
I am in agony today. First, my physical therapist decided to torture me yesterday with a new exercise (you make like you’re going to do a pushup, but have your forearms on the floor, then you lift each foot off the ground alternatively as many times as you can), and now my stomach muscles hurt like heck. I never had sore stomach muscles before, it’s different. Then, people are coming to look at the apartment tomorrow. Rainer says I shouldn’t worry, because they are looking at the apartment, not at how clean it is, but I am a freak about these things, so I’ve been cleaning for the last two days. Dusting on top of the bookcases, organizing the shelves, rinsing out the silverware organizer, vacuuming under the sofa cushions. I know, I know, NO ONE is going to look in these places. I just feel like having only the surface clean is a lie. Like being friendly to someone on the surface, but hating them on the inside. For me, it’s the same feeling.
There was just an interview on BBC with the film critic for Newsweek and he was talking about these two sides of America. There is network TV and studio films on one side, and cable TV and independent films on the other. He thinks that the conservative right and politically correct left are both trying to pull popular culture back in time. This really echoes what I think. I watched a documentary about sex in the cinema a while age, and things were much more risque in the past. Regular people went to X-rated movies in the 70’s. You had Caligula and Midnight Cowboy. There was nudity in some of the movies from the 30’s! I think what’s going on now (hello… Nipplegate!) is an overaction by a small, EXTREMELY vocal, politically powerful minority that are threatened that they are disappearing and are trying to pull the majority back to where they are.
I mean, can’t they see where we’re going? I really wonder about this. If you look at opinion polls about gay marriage, the majority of 30+ year olds are against it, but a large majority of under 30’s are for legalizing it. They’ve read about what happened with women’s rights, they lived it in regards to the end of segregation, so, don’t the older people realize that at some point in time, gay marriage is going to get legalized and they are going to be remembered as bigots? This totally seems obvious to me.

The TV stations have become absolutely paranoid about what they air. They were worried about showing “Saving Private Ryan” as it was violent, etc. So, there was concern that the network would be fined… I agree, we will look back on this and think that our society was gay-phobic and ignorant. Not sure how to change the hyper-sensitivity about morality and breasts on TV. It is hard to save a group that doesn’t see that there is an issue, you know?
