New Quiz!

January 27, 2005 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

I created a new quiz at Funtrivia: Play Quiz: First Lines of Recent Bestsellers now!

Nothing else new to report. Just finished Homicide. Very good. Haven’t been keeping up with the news, so no big political tirades. Back is a little better today. Wrote a note to Mr. Cigarette Dropper. So far, no new ciggies to report.

Word out!

Why do we feel the need to shop?

January 24, 2005 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

It’s like a drug, man. Everytime I log on, I keep finding myself at Amazon.com. It’s some irresistible attraction. What is it? God knows I don’t need anymore books, CDs or DVDs.
I… must… control… myself… ARRRGGGHHH!

The guy living above me is throwing his cigarette butts into my garden. This irritates me to no end. How rude. I’m obsessed with catching him so I can chew him out. I’m spending way too much time outside in the German winter weather looking up at his balcony. But if I don’t catch him in the act, I can’t really just knock on his door and chew him out.

We’re going to get a dog sometime this year. Yay! I want a Bernese Mountain Dog.

Childhood Obesity

January 24, 2005 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

is not just America’s problem anymore. Due to the rising number of obese children in Europe, the European Commision has asked food sellers to voluntarily stop marketing food to children under 12, warning that if their request is not complied with, legislation will be passed forcing them to comply.

And in the ‘who thinks of this stuff’ news category, a British researcher has created a model to assess people’s moods and has declared today as the most depressing day of the year. Yippee, it’s all uphill from here, till next year anyway.

Reactions to Bush’s Inauguration

January 21, 2005 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

Admittedly, I did not watch Bush’s speech. Listening to his bull**** is just not high on my to-do list. I think I was doing a crossword at the time. But Rainer called immediately afterwards to say, “This guy is crazy!” In reference to Bush’s plan to free the world from tyranny, Rainer stated that, “the world did not elect this lunatic, he should keep his craziness in the US.”

Spiegel Online has an interesting article comparing the propaganda of the Bush administration to that of Leni Riefenstahl’s work for the Nazi party. In comparing the US with Nazi Germany, German historian Fritz Stern is quoted as saying, “It’s very unlikely history will repeat itself. It’s much more likely that we’ll be confronted with the danger of a completely new type of authoritarianism. The US is starting to look like a Christian fundamentalist plutocracy.”

My version of Matrix Revolutions

January 20, 2005 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

After Neo stops the squid-things in the “real world” he realizes he can also affect other things, much like when he was in the matrix. Eventually, he realizes the “real world” is just another layer of the matrix inhabited by those who reject the matrix. In the end, he manages to wake himself up in the true real world and finds that humans have messed the planet up so much, that we chose to store ourselves in warehouses and live in the matrix. We created it for ourselves and we created machines to be the caretakers of our bodies.

German Health Care

January 19, 2005 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

Since my back has gotten worse, I went to the surgeon again today, and after waiting 2 hours (due to the German sport of doctor-visiting), I was informed that due to insurance company rules, they can only prescribe 18 physical therapy visits and I’d reached my limits. I have to pay privately from now on. The doctor also informed me that if I’m in a lot of pain, I should go to the emergency room. So, isn’t it cheaper to pay for more physical therapy than for emergency room visits???? What’s up with this illogical insurance system?

I got new shoes today. I’ve come to the conclusion that German women have very narrow feet (with pointy toes). I ended up getting some tannish-green Ecco suede sneakers in the men’s department. The saleslady was very excited to help me and kept suggesting random “chic” shoes. Maybe this was because I was the first customer, who when asked if she could be of help, didn’t reply, “Uhhhhh… I need some shoes.”

I also sent off my first package to soldiers serving in Kuwait (BooksforSoldiers.com), which was expensive, so I won’t be doing that again for awhile.

I’m going to OD on gummi bears soon.

La dee dah

My back got worse over the weekend, but I’m feeling better now. My return to trying to do some work every day probably played a part.

My sleep schedule is completely messed up now. I sleep all day and am awake all night. This kinda bites. Although the TV at night is better; movies instead of talk shows. I also got to watch the Golden Globes last night without making a special effort to be awake. I’m really surprised Closer got two awards. I didn’t find it to be that good. I didn’t care what happened to any of the characters. You can have flawed characters that you still care about.

I made and got a quiz on world leaders accepted at FunTrivia.com. It should be pretty easy if you keep up with the news and all. Play Quiz: Identify the World Leader 2004 now!

If you have extra books, CDs, DVDs, etc., lying around, take a visit to booksforsoldiers.com and send them to our troops overseas!
