The Heart
The Heart by Stephen Crane
In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter - bitter,” he answered;
“But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart.”
This was my favorite poem in high school and college. Yes… I was a very depressed teenager. Prior to this my favorite was Annabelle Lee by Edgar Allen Poe (just further evidence). I might post a poem at some point, but mine are very disturbing and I’m not sure y’all could take it. I have had plans for years to submit my poems to a poetry journal, but I still haven’t got around to it. I really should do this at some point. Ah well.
