Today I was quite impressed by a dog, who was actually misbehaving, but I was still impressed. I was waiting to cross a divided street and the dog was sitting patiently next to his family on the opposite side. My side of the street got a green walk signal before the dog’s side, but when he saw us start walking, he started crossing. He got yelled at, because it was still red for him, but I thought, this is a pretty smart dog. He knows people stop at streets and when the people on the other side cross, it’s okay to cross also. Overall, I am very impressed with how well-trained dogs are in Germany, okay except for my neighbor’s manic Jack Russell that has no self-control, but it is a Jack Russell afterall, what can you expect. You’ll find dogs everywhere, in shops and restaurants and they are not always on a leash. The dogs don’t run crazily all over the place, they stay at their master’s side, sit under the table, and sit at street crossings until their master tells them it’s okay to go. This is really something to aspire to. The downside of dogs in Germany is that Germans don’t clean up poop, so you have to watch where you walk all the time. There’s been an ad campaign here trying to get people to scoop the poop, but I have yet to see a German do it. I have however seen a French person scooping, which nearly cause me to pass out (you’ll understand if you walked around a French city for awhile). If little poodle poops were nickels, the French would easily be Bill Gates.
